Don't let Big Oil take over Grays Harbor

Big oil wants to make Washington State their hub for transporting, storing, and exporting dangerous crude oil from the Bakken shale region. Three oil-by-rail export terminal proposals are being considered for Grays Harbor and two for Vancouver. One proposal would create the largest such facility in the nation.

While you may live hundreds of miles away from Vancouver or Grays Harbor, the cumulative impacts of these projects, especially the rail transportation of explosive crude, threaten the livelihood of millions of Washingtonians from Spokane to the Tri-Cities to Vancouver to Olympia to Everett to Bellingham. These proposed new oil terminals are part of efforts to transform our region into a veritable fossil fuel highway, exacerbating climate impacts.

The time is now to speak up against the proposed crude oil export terminals in Grays Harbor at one of two public hearings.

The risk of an oil spill or accident is not theoretical; we have seen oil trains explode across North America, including the tragic accident in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, that killed 47 people in 2013. We have seen oil spills all along the rail route. And in 1988, one year before the Exxon Valdez, the Nestucca barge 231,000-gallon spill of heavy oil off Grays Harbor fouled beaches from Oregon to Vancouver Island and killed 56,000 sea birds.

Field Director, Climate Solutions

Joëlle engages community members and diverse constituencies—faith, health, youth, parents, business—to make their voices heard for climate solutions. She led the team of organizers to ensure we stopped any coal export from the U.S. West Coast over the past decade. On offense, she co-led the Field team to help pass the 100% Clean Electricity (Clean Energy Transition Act in 2019) and in 2022 collaborated with the Field team to ensure that all new buildings (commercial and residential) will be built with heat pumps per the State Building Code Council. She continues to conspire for good with them on many other local and state initiatives.

Joëlle was the Regional Outreach Coordinator of National Wildlife Federation where she focused on mobilizing hunters, anglers and concerned citizens around solutions to global warming. Previous work with Climate Solutions includes the NW Climate Connections partnership, serving as the Field Assistant for the successful Clean Cars campaign, and Field Director of the Renewable Fuel Standard, which passed in April 2006.

She previously served on the boards of Earth Ministry, Solar Washington, and Sierra Club Executive Committee. She’s currently President of the board of her 3 year-old!
