National Security and Climate Change

Please join us for a public briefing on Thursday, June 5th, on the outcomes of a high-level symposium held the day before and convened by the Henry M. Jackson Foundation and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) to explore the intersection between national security and climate change.

U.S. and Northwest leaders are facing increasingly interrelated national security and climate change challenges – challenges that will only increase in the coming decades.  The symposium featured Alice Hill, The White House’s Senior Advisor on climate change; Congressman Adam Smith; Lynn Best, Environmental Director, Seattle City Light; and Major General Tim Lowenberg, former Adjunct General of the Washington State National Guard; as well as top scientists, military brass, university experts and public and private sector leaders.  Participants outlined strategies for tackling the risks faced by our nation and our region.

This public briefing will provide the key outcomes from the discussion and highlight planned next steps for action.

Speakers at the briefing include:

  • Larry Phillips, King County Council Chair and Jackson Foundation Board Member
  • Captain Eric J. Trehubenko, Department of Defense, Deputy Director of the U.S. Navy’s      Task Force on Climate Change
  • Ian Kraucunas, Deputy Director of the Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change                  Division, PNNL
