The West Coast jurisdictions of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California are poised to lead the nation in growing the clean energy economy by reducing global warming pollution. Put together, those jurisdictions make the fifth largest economy in the world. We are working closely with elected officials from up and down the Pacific coast to transition away from fossil fuels and towards an equitable, prosperous, and low-carbon future. To realize this future, the four West Coast jurisdictions have joined together under the Pacific Coast Collaborative and committed to a set of actions and policies that will reduce carbon pollution and accelerate clean energy action:
- Limit and account for the cost of carbon pollution in our economy. To adequately reflect the costs of climate change, we must end the free dumping of carbon pollution into our atmosphere. We must place scientific limits and adequate prices on carbon pollution to spur investment and job growth in clean energy to replace dirty fossil fuels.
- Replacing coal with clean energy. Coal is the dirtiest energy source and a major source of climate pollution. Retiring the coal-fired power plants across the West that provide electricity to our state and replacing them with renewable energy like wind and solar will spur enormous investment in clean energy and energy efficiency — clean energy investment that creates jobs in our region, improves public health and cuts down our greenhouse gas emissions.
- Reducing carbon pollution from transportation. Nearly half of our greenhouse gas emissions come from cars and trucks because we have no choice but to use petroleum-based gasoline and diesel. We are supporting efforts to implement a Clean Fuels Standard in Oregon that will give homegrown clean fuels a fair shot against Big Oil and consumers more choices at the pump. Replacing petroleum with local, cleaner burning fuels will create jobs, clean up our air, and protect our climate.
Our West Coast Climate Campaign is about taking the actions necessary to put in place the policies that will open up an unprecedented market for cleaner energy and fuels, accelerating investment in low-carbon infrastructure, and making sure the Pacific Northwest is a leader in an equitable, sustainable, vibrant future. It’s happening now, join us!
