The Oregon Public Utility Commission (PUC) recently delivered a significant victory for utility customers and the climate, requiring NW Natural Gas to end the charging of customers to subsidize fossil fuel expansion.

Hundreds of you showed up to public hearings and submitted comments to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality in favor of a robust Climate Protection Program (CPP) that holds our state’s largest polluters accountable. We just found out that NW Natural, the state’s largest methane gas utility, has begun blending hydrogen into the gas system and delivering it to Oregonians’ homes and businesses without any public outreach or oversight. Burning hydrogen with methane in buildings increases exposure to health harms and increases safety risks while offering negligible emissions reductions.

The way grids are operated—including building out transmission infrastructure in the necessary geographies where energy is needed, controlling flows, and handling electricity sales—is a critical piece of our clean energy transition.

There’s no way around it; we cannot meet our air quality and climate goals without retiring the existing fleet of diesel-powered medium- and heavy-duty trucks. Zero-emission electric trucks are available right now, and they can directly replace diesel vehicles to keep our economy moving.
