As part of an ongoing series of carbon tax webinars, the American Sustainable Business Council turns this week to the laboratories of democracy — the states. While the federal government continues to dither, state legislatures from coast to coast are looking to take more aggressive actions to address climate change. And in a few cases, that means carbon taxes. That’s the focus on our next webinar, when we’ll sit down with a series of panelists who are focused on getting carbon taxes passed in the states— and explain why businesses like yours should care, and how you can get involved.
We’ll be joined by:
- Jeff Mauk, Executive Director, National Caucus of Environmental Legislators
- Dan Barlow, Public Policy Manager, VT Businesses for Social Responsibility
- Michael Green, Executive Director, Climate Action Business Association
- Ross Macfarlane, Senior Advisor, Business Partnerships, Climate Solutions
- Richard Eidlin, Vice President, American Sustainable Business Council
Some of the questions panelists will be answering:
- What impact will this have on energy prices or prices of goods?
- What impact will this have on companies’ ability to compete with foreign or out-of-state businesses?
- What impact will a carbon tax have on existing climate strategies like the Clean Power Plan, or existing cap-and-trade systems like RGGI or AB 32?
- What will a carbon tax mean to states that rely heavily on coal?
- Where should the money from a carbon tax go?
Each speaker will discuss what their organization is doing to support carbon tax legislation, specifically in Massachusetts, Vermont, Washington state and Oregon. Afterwards, they’ll take your questions and discuss what success in statehouses or at the ballot box could mean for federal efforts.
