We all have growing concerns about the rising energy demand from data centers. In fact, data centers are the largest source of expected new electricity demand in the Pacific Northwest, with the greatest impact coming over the next few years. This demand adds challenges to achieving our climate and clean energy goals, keeping the lights on, and can have an impact on your utility bills. And data centers aren’t just hungry for power, they consume a large amount of water for cooling purposes, which can impact our environment.
Send a message to your legislators now telling them to “do data right.”
The tech industry is homegrown in Washington. We can be proud of its legacy of leading and innovating while making sure Washington families, workers, communities, and our environment don't bear the cost and impacts of data centers.
This year, the Washington Legislature is considering bills to do data the right way by ensuring the following:
- Affordability: data centers pay the full costs of their energy use and help fund energy assistance for people living on low-incomes
- Reliability: data center buildout doesn’t affect keeping the lights on for existing customers
- Transparency: data centers report their energy and water use
- Clean energy: data centers use clean energy, including closing loopholes to ensure Washington’s 100% clean electricity law applies to data centers
