Our Mission and History

Climate Solutions formed in 1998 when the Olympia, WA-based Atmosphere Alliance, founded by Rhys Roth, joined forces with the local Energy Outreach Center, led by Paul Horton. Our mission is to accelerate practical and profitable solutions to global warming by galvanizing leadership, growing investment, and bridging divides.

Climate Solutions has three core strategic pillars to deliver on our mission and advance our core vision of accelerating Northwest leadership to catalyze national and international solutions at scale:

  1. Public Policy - Establish public policies that reduce global warming pollution and build the clean energy economy.
  2. Strategic Innovation - Build the region’s leadership position in creating model programs and practices that demonstrate that the clean energy economy is real.
  3. Building Power - Build the power of the climate and clean energy movement in the Northwest.

We have a track record of success. (Browse a timeline of our accomplishments here.)  Climate Solutions has built coalitions with cities and rural communities, business and labor partners, environmental and social justice advocates, to drive innovative solutions to the climate challenge.  We helped launch the highly successful U.S. Mayors Climate Agreement, which now includes more than 1,000 cities.  We have accelerated rural economic development through the Harvesting Clean Energy program.  We have led successful campaigns to invest in clean energy and transportation, create green jobs, stop coal exports and advance energy efficiency bills in our region.  As a clean energy economy nonprofit, Climate Solutions has been at the forefront of establishing the Northwest as a national leader in addressing the climate crisis.
